Teaser Trailer for Takashi Miike's BAD LIEUTENANT: TOKYO Unleashes a Stylish Dive Into Crime and Chaos
If there's one filmmaker who never seems to slow down, it's Takashi Miike. While many directors spend years between projects, Miike keeps delivering one wild ride after another, and now he's back with Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo.
Neon has dropped the first teaser trailer for the upcoming crime thriller, and it looks like exactly the kind of dark, hypnotic descent into the criminal underworld you'd expect from the legendary filmmaker.
The movie is set to make its world premiere as a Special Presentation at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival this September, and Neon is already gearing up for its release afterward.
Hopefully audiences won't have to wait too long because this teaser is packed with slick visuals, neon-soaked streets, and plenty of intense attitude.
Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo serves as the third film in the Bad Lieutenant franchise while standing on its own as a follow-up to Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Werner Herzog's 2009 crime drama. This new story shifts the action to Japan, where a disgraced Tokyo detective is pulled into an increasingly dangerous investigation.
The official synopsis reads: “A disgraced Tokyo detective (Shun Oguri) spirals into a world of corruption, addiction, and violence as he becomes entangled in a twisted investigation involving a vengeful ex-Yakuza, an enigmatic FBI agent (Lily James), and a missing daughter of a powerful American family.”
Other story details reveal that the story follows a gambling-addicted Tokyo police officer and an FBI agent searching for the missing daughter of a powerful politician while a mysterious killer stalks them through the city's criminal underworld.
The cast also includes Liv Morgan, Shotaro Mamiya, Jun Kunimura, Hiroshi Tachi, and Nanase Nishino.
TIFF describes the film as "a sensational ride through the darkest crevasses of the criminal underworld." The movie looks like It's loaded with striking imagery, bursts of violence, and gorgeous neon-lit locations.
Miike continues to be one of the busiest filmmakers working today. Along with directing countless television projects, he keeps adding feature films to an already incredible résumé that includes 13 Assassins, Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai, Blade of the Immortal, First Love, Yakuza Apocalypse, Shield of Straw, Ace Attorney, Terra Formars, Lumberjack the Monster, Blue Fight: The Breaking Down of Young Blue Warriors, Sham, and the Nyaight of the Living Cat series.
The screenplay for Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo was written by Daisuke Tengan, and it’s based on the original Bad Lieutenant created by Zoë Lund and Abel Ferrara.
Following its TIFF debut this September, Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo is expected to open in Japan later in 2026, with Neon planning to release the film in the United States shortly afterward.
