Stunning Teaser Trailer for Takeshi Kitano’s Japanese War Epic KUBI

The first teaser trailer has been released for the upcoming Japanese war epic Kubi, which comes from director Takeshi Kitano. The filmmaker has been looking to make this movie for the last thirty years, and he initially started developing it in 1993. That led to a novel that he wrote, and this film is an adaptation of that novel.

The film depicts the historical ‘Honno-ji Incident’ from 1582, “when a key vassal of Oda Nobunaga rose in revolt and caused his master to commit hara-kiri in Kyoto. The reasons for the revolt and whether Akechi Mitsuhide was really the ringleader have been debated ever since.”

The film is said to “explore the ambitions, betrayals, and fates of various characters, including warlords, ninjas, traveling performers, and peasants, and brings out the essence of Kitano’s world, including intense violence and dark humor.”

The filmmaker shared at a press conference: “If possible, I hope this movie will be a hit, and I hope to be able to shoot a few more. When you think of period dramas, you tend to think of historical dramas as historical dramas, but they are all about beautiful success stories, and they don’t depict the dirty parts and jobs of people. I made it. It took a lot of effort to complete it, but I think I was able to make it thanks to the staff and cast.”

Natsuno Takeshi of Kadokawa, who will distribute the film in Japan, said: “It is a rare film, on a scale similar to Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai and Kagemusha, with a tragicomic quality that feels Shakespearean.”

The movie looks like it will be a stunning movie-going experience. Check out the trailer!
