Gotham producer Bruno Heller has been working on developing a new Batman-inspired series that will focus on a young version of Alfred Pennyworth, the man who will one day become Batman's most trusted ally.

The series is called Pennyworth, Jack Bannon (Ripper, The Imitation Game, Endeavor) takes on the role of the title character, and today we have the first teaser trailer to share with you thanks to Epix!

This gives us our first real look at what we can expect from the series, and from what I’m seeing, it looks like it’ll be good! We’ll have a better idea of what we are in store for when a full trailer is eventually released. I’ve included additional details on the series below, but first… enjoy the teaser!

Pennyworth follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred, a former British SAS soldier in his 20s who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire, Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) in 1960s London. Here’s a description of Alfred:

Bannon’s Pennyworth is a boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty; you’d never take him for an SAS killer. Alfred doesn’t know how to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become. He’s a man on the make, who doesn’t know what to make of himself yet.

Bannon looks good in the role! The show is being developed by executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (GothamThe MentalistRome) and executive producer and director Danny Cannon (GothamCSI series). According to Cannon, the series will be an “Unhinged, R-rated” series. He also explained:

"It’s twentysomething years before Gotham, it’s a very different world; this is the DC version of 1960s London. 13 degrees history is different: It’s not the England we know. It looks and feels like, but if you look a little closer, (you ask) why is that like that? Why is that building there? What war is he talking about?"

He also explained that while Alfred won’t be fighting any classic Batman villains, there will be "archetypal villains and classic villains of British literature; they’re all available to us." He went on to tease that Alfred could find himself up against the descendants of of Jack the Ripper.

There will be 10 one hour episodes of Pennyworth, and the series will premiere on Epix this June.
