TERMINATOR: DARK FATE Star Mackenzie Davis Teases Plot Details For Intended Sequel

Terminator: Dark Fate ended up not doing as well at the box office as the studio and creative team had hoped. I actually enjoyed the film, but in the end, not many people went out and saw it. Producer James Cameron and director Tim Miller planned out a new trilogy for the franchise, but it’s safe to say that those plans will never be realized.

One of the film’s stars, Mackenzie Davis, who played the badass character Grace in the film, recently teased what we would have seen in a sequel if it happened. She says that the story would have jumped into the future and focused on her character. She shared with the Happy Sad Confused podcast:

"It was gonna be a sort of timeline thing, where there'd be another timeline that you'd explore. Like, there's no resurrection, but she came from the future, so..."

She wouldn’t give any other details, but James Cameron previously explained that the sequels would explore the human relationship with artificial intelligence. This is something Cameron seemed excited about diving into:

“I feel like one of my major motivations on this film or coming back to the, hopefully franchise, was to explore the human relationship with artificial intelligence. I don't feel we did that in Dark Fate. I feel that we set the stage or we set the table for that exploration, and that exploration would take place in a second film and a third film. And we know exactly where we're going to take that idea. What we wanted to get in the first movie was this idea that it's just going to keep happening. The names will change, but the basic conflict is going to continue to take place until it gets resolved one way or the other.”

He went on to talk about the sequels, saying:

“And so I believe we've set that table and if, like I said, if we get the opportunity, we know where to take the story so that it doesn't become... I think you start simple and then you elaborate, and you can elaborate over a series of films. If they're made by the same people with the same intentions and the same philosophy, then there can be a kind of a story arc across multiple films. But that said, I think Dark Fate stands alone as a pretty good one-time story.”

Davis previously talked about Dark Fate earlier this year with NME earlier this year and how she loved the movie, but there was no demand for it:

“I really loved the movie and I’m so proud of what we did, but there wasn’t a demand for it [at the box office] and to think that there’d be a demand for a seventh film is quite insane. You should just pay attention to what audiences want – and they want new things and I want new things. There are many interesting people that don’t fit the mold of those who make these big franchises who have not had the chance to make movies. We should be investing in them right now.”

I would have liked to see the story continue, but there really is no demand for it. People didn’t really care to go out and see it. The Terminator franchise is dead right now. I’m sure that one day someone will try to get another Terminator movie made, but it most likely won’t be a continuation of this story. It’ll be another attempt to reboot the franchise.
