The 17 Minute TOY STORY 4 Clip Shared at CinemaCon Showed The Creation of Forky
Toy Story 4 is happening and this next chapter of the story will continue the journey of Woody as he learns, grows, and adapts with the world. It was explained that the first three films told his story with Andy and the third movie closed Andy’s story, but the upcoming fourth film will continue the journey of Woody and his friends.
Disney shared the first 17-minutes of the Josh Cooley-directed film with us at CinemaCon and I was very happy with what I saw. I was sucked right into the story and I wish we could have sat there and watched the whole film!
The footage starts out with a flashback of Andy playing with Woody, Buzz, and the other toys nine years ago. It’s raining outside and RC Car is stuck in the gutter outside trying not to be carried away by the rapid waters. Woody brings his friends together to save him.
Bo Peep, Slinky, gymnastic Barbies and the Barrel of Monkeys are the biggest help with this. During this scene we are seeing that Woody and Bo Peep have a strong relationship and are in sync with each other. To save RC, Woody jumps out the window while hanging onto Slinky and the Barrel of Monkeys help in giving Woody a little more slack so that he can reach RC and get him back up into the house.
Before Woody makes it back in, a car drives up and someone walks into the house. The person is there to collect some old toys and Bo Peep ends up being put into a box. The guy walks the box outside and sets it down by his car and he goes running back to the house.
At this point Andy goes to help her but she says that it’s her time to move on to the next kid. She says, “Kids lose their toys every day. Sometimes they get left in the yard or put in the wrong box.” She makes room for Woody to jump in with her and go with her, but as he is about to make the move, Andy comes running outside yelling for Woody and Woody backs off. So Woody stays and Bo Peep goes.
There’s then a nice but quick little recap of the toy’s time with Andy that ends with Andy giving his toys to Bonnie. This plays out along with Randy Newman’s original Toy Story song, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”.
We are now in the present day and Bonnie is playing with her toys but we learn that she hasn’t played with Woody for the third time in the week. Instead she takes his Sheriff’s badge off and puts it on Jessie. Woody is pretty much spending a lot of time in the closet and the other toys are trying to make him feel better as Woody is feeling a little down in the dumps, but he’s doing a good job at hiding it. There’s a point where Woody gets his very first dust bunny and when it’s pointed out to him he can’t get it off of him.
Bonnie is also starting Kindergarten and her parents tell her she can’t bring any toys. She’s really nervous and sad that she can’t bring any of the toys with her, but Woody, being the protector that he is, jumps into her backpack to go with with her to watch over her.
When Bonnie gets to school she is shy and quiet. The other kids in her class around interested in talking to her. The kids are asked to make something with art the supplies that are provided on their tables, but one kid come up and steals Bonnie’s.
Woody goes into help mode, sneaks out of her backpack, jumps into a nearby trashcan and pulls out some discarded trash and art supplies that he manages to get on the table. It’s with these supplies that Bonnie makes the new character Forky!
When she’s done, she throws Forky into her backpack with Woody. As Woody is satisfied with his good deed of the day saying, “We’ve got this whole school thing down. Wait, I can’t believe I’m talking to a spork.” Forky then wakes up and starts completely freaking out! He has no idea what in the hell is going one and he seems terrified. This is turn scares Woody.
When Bonnie comes home and drops her backpack off in her room, Woody jumps out and talks about his experience and that Bonnie ended up having a good day that that she “made a new friend.” The toys thought that was nice and Woody had to drive the point home to them that Bonnie literally “made” a new friend.
It’s at this point that he brings Forky out of the bag and he is just going crazy. He keeps calling himself trash and repeatedly tries to run to the trash can to throw himself away. But, because Bonnie love her new toy, Woody is trying to prevent that from happening. Forky is Bonnie’s safe toy that will help her get through kindergarten.
We then learn that Bonnie’s parents are planning to go on a little road trip and that’s where the footage ends.
I really enjoyed the footage that was shown and while I’ve been a little skeptical of the film, that’s no longer the case. The first 17-minutes of footage quickly made me care about these characters again!
Toy Story 4 stars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Joan Cusack, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Don Rickles, Kristen Schaal, Timothy Dalton, and Blake Clark. New voices include Tony Hale, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, and Patricia Arquette.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) has always been confident about his place in the world, and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. So when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky (voice of Tony Hale), declares himself as “trash” and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy. But when Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts). After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries.
Toy Story 4 opens in theaters on June 21, 2019.
