The 1997 John Woo Directed Film FACE/OFF is Getting Rebooted

In 1997 John Woo directed a crazy action thriller called Face/Off that starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. I’m sure some of you are familiar with the movie and its ridiculous, yet entertaining concept. Well, Paramount Pictures is rebooting the film with an all new cast and they’ve hired Oren Uziel (The Cloverfield Paradox) to write the script.

In the original film, Travolta played an FBI agent named Sean Archer, “who is obsessed with catching a homicidal sociopath named Castor Troy, who is responsible for killing the fed’s son. The agent undergoes facial transplant surgery and takes the mug of his nemesis so he can be sent to prison to find out a bomb’s whereabouts and stop an attack. The plan goes awry when the bad guy wakes up and takes the face of the FBI agent. Soon, the new-faced Castor visits the agent with the villainous face and takes glee in taunting him, telling him that the face surgeons have been killed, that the good guy is stuck with the face he hates most, and that the villain is going home to bed his wife and take over his home life.”

I don’t know why, but this is one of those films that I still have a vivid memory of seeing in the theater. It was such a stupid film with a preposterous concept, but at the time I enjoyed the hell out of it. I actually haven’t seen this movie in years! I think I’ll revisit it soon.

I’m not really interested in seeing it remade. This is one of those films that should only be made once. What do you all think about Face/Off getting remade?

Here’s a trailer for the original film to help bring back the memories.

FBI Special Agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) tries to find a biological weapon placed in Los Angeles by a sadistic terrorist-for-hire and criminal mastermind named Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage). Archer has hunted Troy for the last 8 years, and is consumed by revenge because Troy is responsible for the death of Archer's son.
