The 1999 Film CRUEL INTENTIONS Is Getting a TV Series Sequel

TV Cruel Intentions by Joey Paur

The 1999 film Cruel Intentions is the subject of a new series being developed at NBC. The movie starred Ryan Phillippe, Reese WitherspoonSarah Michelle Gellar, and Selma Blair, and since its release it has gained a decent-sized cult following.

Deadline is reporting that the new series will serve as a sequel to the film, and it is set 20 years after the events of the first film. It will focus on Bash Casey, who happens to be the son of Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon’s characters. Here are the full details:

Cruel Intentions follows the rags-to-riches story of 16-year-old Bash Casey, the son of the late Sebastian Valmont (played by Phillippe) and Annette Hargrove (Witherspoon). Upon finding his late father’s journal, Bash learns of the family legacy he didn’t know existed. In search of answers, he trades his small-town Kansas upbringing for a scholarship to the prestigious Brighton Preparatory Academy in San Francisco and soon finds himself in a world of sex, money, power, and corruption he never could have imagined.

The screenwriter of the original film, Roger Kumble, will be back to write the script and develop the series alongside Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross, who are the creators of stage show The Unauthorized Musical Parody Of Cruel Intentions. Kumble will also direct the pilot episode. There’s no word yet on whether or not Witherspoon or Gellar’s characters will be involved in the series, but I seriously doubt it. I'm sure their characters will be a part show, but they'll probably be re-cast.

If you're a fan of the first film, are you excited for this new series that is being developed?
