THE ABYSS 4K Canceled in the UK Over Scene James Cameron Refuses to Cut
The release of James Cameron’s 4K restoration of The Abyss has been canceled in the UK over a scene that UK censors wanted cut out of the film.
According to Digital Bits, UK censors wanted to cut the scene where the rat is submerged in breathing fluid. The rat was unharmed in real life, and even in the story, it survives the breathing fluid.
Disney was apparently fine with editing the film, but Cameron was not and his Lightstorm production company wouldn’t do it. If you’ve seen the movie then you know there is an important reason for this scene that sets the stage for later when Ed Harris’ character Bud is submerged in the fluid.
It’s so funny and strange to me that censors want to cut the scene with the rat, but it’s okay to keep the scene with a human having to go through the same experience.
.So if you want to buy The Abyss 4K and you live in the UK, you’ll have to import it from the United States and like all 4K films, it will be region-free.
In the film, “a nuclear sub mysteriously sinks and a private oil rig crew, led by foreman Bud Brigman, is recruited to join a team of Navy SEALs on a search and rescue effort,” reads the synopsis. “The group soon finds themselves on a spectacular life-and-death odyssey 25,000 feet below the ocean’s surface, where they find a mysterious force that could either change the world — or destroy it.”
The Abyss stars Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Michael Biehn, Todd Graff, John Bedford Lloyd, and Kimberly Scott.
The Abyss is still due to be released on 4K UltraHD on March 12, 2024.
