THE AWAKENING Trailer Unleashes an Ancient Evil on an Elite Military Squad in the Colombian Jungle
An elite military squad trained to handle the deadliest threats is about to discover that some enemies can't be taken down with bullets. The new trailer for the sci-fi action horror film The Awakening sends a team of soldiers into the Colombian jungle, where an ancient evil is waiting to turn their mission into a fight for survival.
The film follows an elite military unit sent into hostile territory to eliminate an enemy target. These soldiers know how to handle dangerous situations, but their training means little when they encounter a terrifying force that has haunted the jungle for centuries.
The story also takes audiences 500 years into the past, when a Spanish conquistador expedition encountered the same deadly curse. The two groups, separated by centuries, find themselves fighting against something far more dangerous than anything they expected.
Well Go USA shared the following official synopsis: “An elite military unit ventures into a Colombian jungle on a mission to eliminate an enemy target. What begins as a tactical operation quickly descends into a frenzied nightmare when a primeval force awakens in the darkness.
“Five hundred years earlier, a Spanish conquistador expedition was consumed by the same relentless curse. Separated by centuries but connected by the same hostile territory, both groups fight to survive the jungle’s curse.”
It's a cool premise that mixes military action, supernatural horror, and a centuries-old mystery. Watching heavily armed soldiers discover that their weapons might be useless against an ancient curse sounds like a fun recipe for some intense horror.
The film features an ensemble cast that includes Claudio Cataño (Pacific), Alejandro Buitrago (Narcos), Héctor Sánchez (Mi Bestia), Andrea Olaya (Thousand Fangs), Quique Sanmartín (Pepe Caceres), Jaisson Jeack (Thousand Fangs), Carlos Mariño (The Initiated), Andres Londono (Narcos: Mexico), Salvador Bridges (Adiós al amigo), and Ricardo Leguizamo (Vampire Academy).
The Awakening was written and directed by Jaime Osorio Marquez, who previously directed The Squad. Sadly, Marquez passed away before he could complete the movie.
His co-creator and producer, Federico Durán, worked with director José Luis Rugeles (Alias Maria, Rebellion) to finish the project and bring Marquez's vision to the screen.
Latido Films founder and managing director Antonio Saura previously spoke about the importance of preserving the filmmaker's work, saying:
“With The Awakening, we recover the magic of a magnificent filmmaker like Jaime Osorio, for us the best creator of magic realism horror in Latin America.
“This film, curated by some of the best directors in Colombia – his friends responsible for his legacy – is a great example of his vision for action, horror, fun and amazing directing. We are proud to be part of this film and this adventure.”
Durán also reflected on the personal significance of completing the movie: “The Awakening is a gripping and deeply moving journey into the heart of darkness – not only for the story that unfolds on screen, but also for the story behind it: that of a director who passed away before seeing it completed and the remarkable effort to preserve and restore his vision and his work.”
Knowing what went into finishing the film adds another layer of appreciation for the project. It's great that Marquez's collaborators were able to come together and complete the movie he started.
The Awakening arrives on Digital November 10, followed by a Blu-ray and DVD release on December 15.
