THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Is Looking to Create a Batverse Because "Gotham's Story Never Ends"
While Matt Reeves directed The Batman, he is also developing a couple of spinoff shows for HBO Max. One of those shows will focus on the Gotham City Police Department and the other will focus on Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. Penguin. It seems like these shows might just be the beginning of Batverse that Reeves wants to build.
There are certainly a lot of cool, interesting, and sinister characters in the Batman stories to play with and explore. This whole new Batman universe will kick off with The Batman, which will feature a whole slew of characters including Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin (Colin Farrell), Edward Nashton, aka The Ridder (Paul Dano), Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), and more.
Reeves shared his desire to build a Batverse during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying:
"What I really wanted this movie to do is create a Batverse. You don't do a story and go, 'This is Chapter 1' because you might not get to do Chapter 2. So, the story had to stand on its own. But the thing about it is that the Bat world is so rich with character that as you're starting to come to an end, you can already start thinking about the next thing. Because the idea, of course, is that Gotham's story never ends."
It’s true! There are so many stories to tell in Gotham city involving so many different characters! I’d love to see those stories told and characters explored. It’ll be interesting to see how Reeves continues to build on this new vision of Batman and Gotham City.
The Batman debuts in theaters on March 4, 2022.
