THE BATMAN Director Talks About Comic Book Inspiration and Making it Relevant to the Time
The Batman director Matt Reeves has already said a lot of stuff that we want to hear about his film. Specifically that he is looking to tell a noir-style story that will focus on the detective version of Batman. A lot of fans have been wanting to see a Batman movie take this direction and it looks like it's finally gonna happen.
I've been curious to know what Batman comic books Reeves has been looking at for inspiration on this new Batman movie. The director offered a little tease regarding that in a recent interview with Variety’s Playback Podcast. He didn't name any specific comics, but he did say:
“I could imagine the stories being noir, like, heavily point-of-view driven. The original stories in the early days were detective stories....I can tell you this: we are looking into all of those [comic arcs], and I’m also looking into ways it feels personal.”
He may not name which comics, but he does say they are looking into all of those comic arcs. So, chances are if there's a Batman story that you love, he's looking at it. Reeves goes on to talk about connecting the story and making it relevant to the time.
“Like I said, the thing that’s interesting is the way in which you connect to these stories. I think I’ll draw inspiration from these stories, but I want it to be rooted in something that feels not personal to me but relevant to the time.”
Like many of us, Reeves was a big fan of Batman when he was a kid and obviously had a lot of Batman toys.
“I was also a Batman fan. There were these dolls when I was kid...They had Batman and Robin and all the Planet of the Apes. I was captivated by him as a character. I had all the toys and Batmobile.”
His love for the character shows when he talks about his plans for the movie. The guy doesn't want to screw this up and he wants to give fans an amazing Batman film that they will be proud of. I honestly think that he will pull it off. He's such a great director. I love what he's done with the Planet of the Apes franchise.
Reeves then went on to talk about the similarities between Ceasar from his Planet of the Apes films and Batman, saying:
“I think what I see in Batman that I find so interesting is that - in a way - he reminds me of Caesar. He is a character who with a really troubled past who is grappling within himself to find the way to do the right thing in a really imperfect world - in a corrupt world."
The more Reeves talks about The Batman, the more excited I get about what he is going to do with it. I can't wait to see how it all comes together.
