THE BATMAN is Said To Be a Character Based Movie Focusing on Alfred and Batman
We’ve got a few new little details to share with you regarding director Matt Reeves’ The Batman. During a recent interview with Collider, the film’s cinematographer Greig Fraser talked about his work on the film and while he didn’t go into great detail about anything, he did reveal that the movie is a character-driven story that will put a focus on the relationship between Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) and Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis). Fraser explained:
"I can tell you is what some of the actors have gone away and said. It is a character based movie about the characters, about Andy Serkis’ character and Robert Pattinson’s character. It’s a very good script, like all of Matt’s scripts it’s very good, very well thought out.”
He went on to talk about Reeves saying that he’s a gutsy director for taking on a project like this with all of the pressure that comes along with it:
"We’re having a ball making it. We’re going our best. It’s a lot of pressure. I don’t think Matt takes non-pressure movies. To do the American version of Let the Right One In, that’s a huge pressure. To do the Apes movies which I think a lot of people have a lot of vested interest in is a lot of pressure. So Batman is a lot of pressure. He’s gutsy, he’s a gutsy director."
Fraser also talks about what makes Reeves such a great choice to take Batman, saying:
"Naturally casting is a big part of it, but it’s the work of a very, very good director to have you find emotion in things that are innately unemotional. I'm talking about animals, apes. He did a brilliant job with that. So I’m excited to be working with him currently on Batman."
The Batman is expected to resume shooting in the United Kingdom in the coming weeks, so we'll hopefully see more from the movie soon!
The film also stars Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, John Turturro (The Night Of) as Carmine Falcone and Peter Sarsgaard (Green Lantern) as Gil Colson. Gil Perez-Abraham (Orange is the New Black), Charlie Carver (Teen Wolf), and Max Carver (Teen Wolf) have also been cast in undisclosed roles.
The Batman will be a noir-style film that will lean into Batman in his detective mode. The director said that it’s going to tell a deep and psychological story and confirmed that the movie will not be an origin story. However, it will acknowledge his origin and how it’s still something that he’s “majorly struggling” with. When previously talking about the film, Reeves said:
“It's very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It's more Batman in his detective mode than we've seen in the films. The comics have a history of that.”
The Batman is now scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2021.
