THE BATMAN: PART II Gets Disappointing Casting Update with THE PENGUIN Season 2 on the Back Burner

Matt Reeves has created a DC Universe adjacent world with his movie The Batman and its spinoff series The Penguin. Fans have responded positively to both, excited for the continuation of his take on this universe.

While we still have over a year and a half until the sequel The Batman: Part II, many were hoping we would see a second season of the show by then, but a couple of updates have rolled out, and it doesn’t look good.

First off, it’s been confirmed by Matt Reeves that Colin Ferrell’s Oswald Cobb won’t be featured in any sort of main role in the film, and Cristin Milioti, who plays the psychotic Sofia Falcone, will be completely absent. Reeves has sung the actress’s praises, but has said that the script had already been set in a direction without her character by the time the series was being made.

When talking to Deadline alongside actor Topher Grace, Milioti was asked what she’s heard about Season 2 of The Penguin. She responded, “There’s no official word on anything. And I would love nothing more, truly.”

Grace then added, “I would like to chime in on this and say, whoever is in charge of that decision, ‘what are you doing?’ This is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen on TV. We gotta have a Season 2.”

The interviewer then asked about the film and whether or not Milioti was definitively not in it. She answered, “Definitely not in the film. Which is a bummer.” Once more, Grace added, “What are you doing? We’re looking at one of the great performances of our time. Figure it out, guys.”

Speaking about The Penguin, Reeves said, “And what [The Penguin showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] did in creating that character. I mean, creating this version of the character. It’s so special, so it’d be really exciting to do something with her. But she’s not in this one, in full disclosure, because we were so far along in the story.”

So what we can expect is a film that’s still pretty far off, and a second season that is still up in the air. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.

The Batman: Part II is set to be released in theatres on October 1, 2027.
