THE BATMAN Writer Mattson Tomlin Says He’s “Trying” To Get Raimi’s SPIDER-MAN 4 Moving

Ever since Tobey Maguire returned as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have been hoping to see Spider-Man 4 get made with director Sam Raimi.

The idea seemed far-fetched at first, but with No Way Home pulling in over a billion dollars worldwide, Sony revisiting Raimi’s trilogy suddenly doesn’t feel so impossible.

Back in 2024, Raimi addressed the rumors and made it clear that, while flattered, nothing was in motion on his end.

“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet,” the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director said. “I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet.

“I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!’”

He added, “I’m not sure, but I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it.”

Now there’s a new wrinkle in the story, and it comes from Mattson Tomlin, co-writer of The Batman: Part II, who has been openly passionate about finishing Raimi’s saga.

He’s previously said he’d love to explore Peter Parker’s struggle with raising a family while still being Spider-Man. Recently, when an X user joked about funding him to write the script, Tomlin simply replied:

“Trying!”

He followed that up with another comment: “I do enjoy how the phrasing of all this conjures the image of me dialing random numbers on the phone, holding a speaker over my head in the street, or putting messages in bottles and throwing them into the sea.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean Spider-Man 4 is officially happening, but the interest from creators inside the industry keeps the possibility alive.

With Maguire rumored to be popping up again in one o these Avengers movies, Marvel and Sony could be waiting until after the Multiverse Saga wraps before deciding whether to bring Raimi and his original cast back together, if that’s even an actual plan.

For his part, Raimi has admitted he’d happily return to work with Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, whether in another Spider-Man film or not.

“I’ve come to realize after making Doctor Strange that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups. I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible.

“I don’t really have a story or a plan. I don’t know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don’t know what their thoughts are about that. I haven’t really pursued that.

“But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn’t a Spider-Man movie, I’d love to work with Tobey again, in a different role.”

So, while nothing is locked in yet, the dream of Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 isn’t dead. Would you like to see Maguire return for one more solo adventure?
