The BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Reboot Series Moves Forward with Lead Writer and Showrunner Michael Lesslie
Mr. Robot and Homecoming creator Sam Esmail has been developing a Battlestar Galactica reboot series for NBC’s upcoming Peacock streaming service. That series is moving forward with the hiring of Michael Lesslie, who was hired as the lead writer and showrunner for the show. Lesslie was previously the lead writer and showrunner of AMC’s spy drama The Little Drummer Girl and penned scripts for Macbeth and Assassin’s Creed. He said in a statement:
“I am beyond excited to be taking on this iconic and inspirational show. As a lifelong devotee, I know that the possibilities of Battlestar Galactica’s world are infinite and that each iteration has raised the bar for epic and intelligent sci-fi storytelling. The teams at Esmail Corp, UCP and Peacock are second to none, and I already know that we are going to honour Glen A Larson and Ronald D Moore’s landmark series and break new boundaries with our own vision. It’s a dream come true – one I just can’t wait to share with fans, new and old alike. So say we all.”
The show was originally being billed as “an original series,” but this series might end up being set in the same universe as Ronald D. Moore’s incredible series, which ran from 2004 to 2009. Moore explained in a previously interview that he and Esmail discussed the upcoming show. During these conversations, Moore learned that instead of starting from scratch, Esmail planned on keeping his show in the same universe.
“Sam called me and was very gracious, he didn’t pitch me the story so I don’t know. But he said his plans and he wasn’t going to re-start the show and recast it but he wanted to do something in the same universe. Sam’s amazing and I love Mr. Robot. I was like, you know, ‘You’re an amazing guy and amazing writer, go with god!'”
With the way that Moore’s series ended, it would be easy for Esmail and Lesslie to build a show in the same universe. As I previously explained, by the end of the series, it was revealed that the show was set in a cyclical universe, where the events that play out happen again every few thousand years. So, this next show could be set during a new cycle.
We’ll eventually see what is being planned, but it’s clear that the new series will pay tribute to Glen A Larson and Ronald D Moore’s shows. I can’t wait to see what Esmail and Lesslie bring to the new series and how they will reimagine the world of Battlestar Galactica.
