THE BEASTMASTER Director Is Searching for a Missing Negative to Complete the Original Film, Can You Help Find It?
In 1982, the movie The Beastmaster was released in theaters and became a classic to fans who saw and loved it. The film is a sword-and-sorcery fantasy that follows a warrior who can telepathically communicate with animals and goes on a journey of revenge alongside his animal allies. The movie is still beloved to its fans, and the people who made it, including director and co-writer Don Coscarelli. But he has a problem- the film is lost. The original negative is, at least, and he’s hoping you can help him.
Coscarelli launched the website this week www.whereisthebeastmaster.com, and explained the situation to EW:
“The rights holder sent [someone] to pick up the negative and the guy put it in his vault in the San Fernando valley. Then he sold the house and now he [doesn’t] know where it is. As they used to say in the labs, when we were making Phantasm, nothing’s ever lost, it’s just misplaced. We have this fervent hope that maybe we can reinvigorate this fan base of ours to go out and help find it."
So if you or someone you know has moved into a home in the San Fernando Valley, maybe look around for the missing original. It would mean a lot to Don Coscarelli, and it would make for a pretty good story!
