The Big Screen Adaptation of CATS Featurette Offers a First Look at the Film and The Incredible Cast
I’ve been really curious about this feature film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic Broadway musical Cats. I’ve wondered how exactly director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables) is going to pull this off, and now, thanks to this featurette, we have an idea of what he is doing to bring this story to life.
Cats has put together an impressive cast of actors to star in the film including James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson and introduces Royal Ballet principal dancer Francesca Hayward in her feature film debut.
As you’ll see, the film has spectacular production design, and they are using state-of-the-art technology to bring these characters to life. The production will also include dance styles ranging from ballet to contemporary, hip-hop to jazz, street to tap. The movie looks like it’s going to be ambitiously big in scope.
The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as "the Jellicle choice" and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The plot is actually pretty insane.
The screenplay for the film was written by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot). Cats opens in theaters December 20, 2019. The first trailer for the film is set to drop on Friday, so stay tuned for that!
