The Biggest Display of Jack Kirby Art Ever Is at Cal State Northridge Now!

Art Jack Kirby by Joey Paur

Jack Kirby is one of the most legendary comic artists that has ever lived. His career has spanned from Marvel to DC and beyond. Kirby is the creator of some of the most iconic pieces of comic book art ever created, and if you live in the Los Angeles area, and can see some of his original work for yourself.

Cal State Northridge is hosting the largest collection of Jack Kirby art ever in the U.S. at an exhibit they are calling, “Comic Book Apocalypse: The Graphic World of Jack Kirby.” The exhibit opens today on August 24th and will run until October 10th, so there's plenty of time to check this out.

The exhibition is curated by English professor Chris Hatfield, who teaches CSUN’s own Comics and Graphic Novels course. In a statement he says:

“We call the show ‘Comic Book Apocalypse’ because when you’re dealing with Kirby, nothing less than the end of everything is at stake. A neglected giant of American comics and popular culture.”

The official website for the event offers the following description of the gallery:

“Famed comics artist Jack Kirby, whose work launched The Avengers, X-Men, Captain America, and the Marvel Universe, is the focus of an exhibition at the California State University, Northridge Art Galleries.  While focusing on Kirby’s later work, from about 1965 on, the exhibition will document his entire career, which lasted more than half a century and involved almost every major publisher in comic books. Comic Book Apocalypse is curated by Professor Charles Hatfield, founder of CSUN’s popular 'Comics and Graphic Novels' course and the author Hand of Fire: The Comics Art of Jack Kirby.”

You can see a few pieces of art from Kirby below that will be on display, thanks to Comics Reporter and CBR. I'll definitely be hitting up the gallery soon! If you're a comic book or art fan, this is an event not to be missed.
