THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT Is More THE GODFATHER Than It Is a Western
Thanks to actress Ming-Na Wen, we have more insight on the upcoming Mandalorian spinoff series, The Book of Boba Fett, that Star Wars fans might be interested in learning.
As you know, The Mandalorian was heavily inspired by the Western genre. The creative team embraced that tone and style. But, The Book of Boba Fett is going to be a different kind of beast. It will be more like a gangster movie like The Godfather than it is a western.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wen, who plays Fennec Shand said, "If The Mandalorian is a planet-hopping, gunslinging Western, Wen describes Boba Fett as 'more like a take on gangster movies' -- less The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, more The Godfather."
When talking about the type of characters that Boba Fett and Fennec Shand are, Wen said, "I feel like [Fennec and Boba] are bonded because both of them had near-death experiences. They're both bounty hunters, and they do adhere to a certain level of respect and honor. He saved her, and there's a debt to be paid, and bounty hunters honor that debt."
It sounds like the The Book of Boba Fett might have been inspired by the series that George Lucas was developing years ago, Star Wars: Underworld. That project was also described as being The Godfather, with mob bosses and bounty hunters.
I’m excited about this show! This story focuses on Fett as he is looking to fill the power vacuum left by in the galaxy’s criminal underworld left behind by Jabba the Hutt. In the trailer he says that Jabba the Hutt ruled with fear, but that he will rule with respect.
The Book of Boba Fett tells “a thrilling Star Wars adventure teased in a surprise end-credit sequence following the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.”
The Book of Boba Fett stars Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen. The series is also executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Robert Rodriguez, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck serve as co-executive producers, with John Bartnicki producing and John Hampian as co-producer.
Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett will debut on Disney+ on December 29th.
