THE BOROUGHS Trailer Unleashes Supernatural Chaos in a Retirement Community - From the Creators of STRANGER THINGS

The Boroughs just dropped its first trailer, and it’s doing something pretty great with a familiar formula. This time, instead of kids on bikes dealing with supernatural chaos, it’s a group of seniors in a desert retirement community uncovering something strange and possibly deadly.

If you’ve been wondering what comes next for the minds behind Stranger Things, this gives you a fun and eerie taste of what they’ve been cooking up.

Even before Stranger Things wrapped up earlier this year, Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer were already branching out, building their next wave of projects as producers.

Coming off their co-produced thriller Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen with Haley Z. Boston, they’ve now teamed up with Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews for something that feels like a clever remix of their biggest hit.

The pitch practically writes itself: what if you took that same sense of mystery, supernatural danger and dropped it into a retirement community filled with people who’ve already lived full lives?

At the center of it all is Alfred Molina, playing Sam Cooper, a man who isn’t exactly thrilled about relocating to The Boroughs, a picture-perfect retirement spot tucked away in the New Mexico desert.

To him, it feels like a place you go when you’re ready to check out of life. But things shift quickly once he settles in and starts connecting with the other residents. It turns out this place has more going on beneath the surface, and instead of slowing down, Sam may be stepping into something far more dangerous.

Molina is joined by Alfre Woodard, Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, Clark Peters, and Denis O’Hare, creating a lineup packed with talent that doesn’t need flashy tricks to pull you in. Watching actors like this navigate a mystery with supernatural edges already gives the show a different kind of energy compared to its younger-skewing counterpart.

The trailer leans into that familiar mix of curiosity and unease. It isn’t as horror-heavy as Stranger Things, but there are definitely some unsettling moments, including glimpses of creatures that look like they walked straight out of a Roswell conspiracy theory.

At the same time, there’s a sense of discovery and wonder that keeps it from feeling too dark. It’s that balance that made the Duffers’ earlier work click, and it looks like they’re aiming for a similar sweet spot here, just with a very different group of characters at the center.

There’s something especially fun about seeing this kind of story told through older characters who aren’t usually the ones leading the charge in genre series. It adds a fresh perspective and raises the stakes in a different way. These aren’t kids stumbling into danger. These are older and seasoned people who know exactly what they’re risking.

The Boroughs lands on Netflix on May 21, and it might end up being one of the more interesting post-Stranger Things projects to keep an eye on.
