If you grew up in the 80s, then you’re definitely familiar with the animatronic teddy bear toy, Teddy Ruxpin. I never owned one, I was more of a G.I. Joe, He-Man, and Transformers guy, but Teddy is the latest toy of the 80s to get the film and TV treatment.

DJ2 Entertainment, the production company behind adaptations of video game properties including Sonic the Hedgehog, Life Is Strange and Tomb Raider, has acquired the rights to Teddy Ruxpin and they have some big plans for it.

DJ2 is currently discussing the project with potential writers and the goal is “to launch with a possible hybrid live-action/animated film — similar to the company’s work on Paramount’s Sonic — before expanding to an animated series.”

DJ2 founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson said in a statement, “I’m no hunter, but I’ve been tracking this bear for at least seven years. It’s no exaggeration to say that the time I spent enraptured by the stories Teddy Rux told me is a large part of why I chose a career in entertainment. So, thanks Teddy — and, of course, thanks, mom.”

Jan Forsse, President of Alchemy, shared, “Teddy encourages two things the world always needs: connection and imagination. We’re very pleased to be working with DJ2, and so gratified that people like Dmitri and his team retain their passion for, and connection to, our Teddy.  Like us, they want to continue sharing him with the children of the world.”

For those of you who don’t know, the toy came preloaded with a cassette tape that enabled Teddy to tell stories while his mouth and eyes moved. It would also stand over you and creepily stare at you while holding a butcher knife while you slept at night. Ok, maybe not, but you were asleep, so you’d never know!

What do you think about the movie and TV projects being developed for Teddy Ruxpin?
