The Classic 90s Hollywood Set Dark Comedy SWIMMING WITH SHARKS Is Getting a Series Adaptation

In 1994 a fantastic film was released titled Swimming With Sharks. This is one of my favorite films about trying to make it in Hollywood. The story centered around a character named Guy (Frank Whaley), a young film executive who's willing to do whatever it takes to make a name for himself in Hollywood. He ends up landing a job working for famed producer Buddy Ackerman (Kevin Spacey), who is a domineering, manipulative, coldhearted boss. When Guy finds out that his cynical girlfriend, Dawn (Michelle Forbes), has been using sex as a career move, he reaches his limit and embarks on a mission of revenge by kidnapping Buddy and subjecting him to cruel and torturous punishment.

Quibi has announced that they will be adapting this film into a series, and they’ve cast Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds) in the lead roles.

The series is described as a “contemporary update of George Huang’s original film that both celebrates and skewers the Hollywood studio system. In this adaptation, Lou, a young female assistant (Shipka), works for Joyce, a sole female studio head (Kruger), at a company filled with manipulators, schemers and intrigue, but little do they know Lou is poised to outwit them all.”

Obviously this is going to be a very different take on the story the film told because the way Hollywood works has changed a lot since the 90s. I’d be willing to give the series a shot, but if you haven’t seen the original movie, you should probably do that! It’s quite an entertaining flick!

If you have seen the film, what do you think about the direction that this series adaptation is taking?
