The Classic 90s Sci-Fi Book Series ANIMORPHS Is Getting a Film Adaptation
The hugely popular 1990s kids sci-fi book series Animorphs is getting the big-screen adaptation that fans have been hoping to see for years.
Scholastic Entertainment is partnering with producer Erik Feig and his Picturestart banner to bring the K.A. Applegate written series to life as a feature film.
The story follows five teens named Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias, who have the ability to morph into any animal they touch. They use their crazy powers to fight a secret alien invasion of Earth. Here’s the description from the first book:
The Earth is being invaded, but no one knows about it. When Jake, Rachel, Tobias, Cassie, and Marco stumble upon a downed alien spaceship and its dying pilot, they're given an incredible power -- they can transform into any animal they touch. With it, they become Animorphs, the unlikely champions in a secret war for the planet.
And the enemies they're fighting could be anyone . . . even the people closest to them.
Hopefully, in the film when they morph into animals, we don’t get any Cats flashbacks. This is sure to make a really weird yet fun film franchise. Scholastic also has plans to launch a graphic novel adaptation of the Animorphs series through its Scholastic Graphix imprint. That series will be released on October 6th. Eisner-Award nominee Chris Gine adapted the first novel, The Invasion.
There are 54 books in total in the Animorphs book series. Scholastic’s Iole Lucchese said in a statement:
"The central themes of Animorphs have resonated strongly with kids for more than two decades, and the time is right for a feature film that takes this captivating sci-fi adventure to another level for audiences today. Picturestart has an incredible track record of success, and Erik and his team are the perfect partners to help bring this exciting new series based on the adventure-packed books to movie screens."
Erik Feig added:
"We couldn't be more excited to work with Scholastic to adapt Animorphs, an iconic book series with a wildly unique combination of exciting, witty, outlandish and grounded elements that feel all too relevant for our times. We know these books have a deservedly deep bench of passionate fans — ourselves included— and we hope to make Katherine Applegate and her co-author, Michael Grant, proud as we bring Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias to life for a new generation."
It’ll be interesting to see how this movie turns out and if it will launch a successful film franchise. It certainly has the potential.
