The CLAYFACE Popcorn Bucket Brings DCU Body Horror to the Concession Stand
Hope you like a little body horror with your popcorn. DC Studios’ Clayface is creeping toward theaters this October, and the marketing team has cooked up a wonderfully gross popcorn bucket that looks like it belongs in the movie.
Considering this is an R-rated DC horror flick about a guy whose body transforms into living clay, a normal plastic tub clearly wasn’t going to cut it.
An image of the Clayface popcorn bucket surfaced at a theater thanks to the X account Home of DCU. The design features a gnarly clay-like hand reaching out from a rounded container, with the Clayface logo displayed across the front.
It’s weird and appropriately unpleasant. Fill that thing with buttery popcorn and you’ve got yourself a disgusting little movie-night companion.
Themed popcorn buckets have become a huge part of blockbuster marketing, and Clayface certainly gives the designers plenty of nasty material to play with. This particular collectible also fits nicely with what DC Studios has been telling us about the movie itself.
Clayface stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, a rising actor who suffers a horrific disfigurement. Desperate to restore his face, Hagen volunteers as a test subject for an experimental procedure. Instead of simply getting his old appearance back, he experiences gruesome side effects that transform his body into living clay while leaving him struggling with his own identity.
James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Flanagan originally pitched Clayface to DC Studios in March 2023, but scheduling conflicts with his other projects prevented him from directing, which is a shame.
The cast also includes Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlin Corr, the scientist responsible for creating Clayface, while Max Minghella plays Gotham City police detective John Borelli. Eddie Marsan and David Dencik also appear in the film.
Clayface carries an R rating and has been compared to David Cronenberg’s 1986 body horror classic The Fly. Gunn has described the project as a body horror movie designed to appeal to horror fans beyond the usual DC audience.
That makes Clayface a particularly fun character to play with in the DCU. Watching Matt Hagen physically lose control of his body while trying to hold onto who he is could get seriously messed up, especially with the filmmakers embracing the horror side of the character.
Filming took place in Liverpool and at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England, with principal photography running from late August through early November 2025 under the working title Corinthians. The movie is part of DC Studios’ Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
Warner Bros. Pictures will be released in theaters on October 23. Enjoy reaching into a bucket with a severed clay hand reaching out at you as you go for another handful of popcorn.
