THE CONJURING Producer Teases More Spinoffs in the Expanding Horror Universe

The Conjuring franchise has been haunting theaters for over a decade, and it sounds like the supernatural ride is nowhere near finished.

Producer Peter Safran has been talking about where things go now that The Conjuring: Last Rites has come and gone, and fans of the horror universe have plenty of reasons to get excited.

Safran suggests that even though Last Rites closes a major chapter, it definitely is not the endpoint for this world of demons, cursed objects, and the families caught in their path.

During a recent Warner Bros. preview event, Safran explained that the audience response to these films continues to show just how strongly people connect with this universe. He pointed to the newest chapter as proof that the series still has real momentum. “I think that Last Rites shows that there is a lot of fuel left in the tank.”

He made it clear that Last Rites wraps the story centered on Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, the duo who brought Ed and Lorraine Warren to life in the core films, but that doesn’t mean the well is dry.

“It was the end of that particular version of the story with Patrick and Vera and that version of The Conjuring. There’s so much more to it that we haven’t dug into,” Safran said.

“I think there’s really exciting ways to go with both film and television, frankly. It would be incredibly satisfying. People have been on this journey with us for a dozen years now. I think they want more.”

Safran went on to talk about the newer characters introduced in Last Rites who have already made an impact on fans. Judy Warren and Tony Spera, who step into a larger role this time around, seem to have struck a chord with audiences.

“The introduction, in a real way, of Judy and Tony, I think, people love. The feedback we got was they love those characters. So I think that there’ll be more to come,” the DC Studios Co CEO said.

At this point Safran is not announcing any official spin offs or giving a timeline, but he leaves no doubt that the franchise is still very much alive behind the scenes. With the supernatural world of The Conjuring continuing to expand and plenty of eerie corners still unexplored, it seems like this universe has many more stories waiting to crawl out of the dark.

Whatever the future of this franchise holds, I just hope the movies are good, because while Last Rites was a success, it was one of the worst films in the franchise.
