The Creator of SQUID GAME Teases Season 3 After Insane Season 2 Finale

“If the world doesn’t change, the game doesn’t end.” These haunting words from the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) to Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) in Squid Game Season 2 set the stage for an even darker and more intense story in Season 3.

After the shocking events of the Season 2 finale, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is teasing what’s to come in the final chapter of the Netflix phenomenon—and it’s guaranteed to leave fans reeling.

Season 2 ends on a devastating note, with Gi-hun’s rebellion against the deadly games crumbling under the weight of betrayal. Front Man, posing as Player 001 under the alias “Young-il,” sabotages the uprising, ultimately killing Gi-hun’s closest ally, Park Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan).

Hwang told Netflix’s Tudum: “Audiences are definitely going to be shocked and very sad to see Jung-bae go.” He described Jung-bae as “the only person within the games that Gi-hun can trust and completely rely on.”

The season concludes with Gi-hun screaming in anguish, believing both his best friend and “Young-il” are dead. However, the truth remains hidden: In-ho, the Front Man, orchestrated the events all along.

Hwang explained: “That was his intention and plan all along. The Front Man starts off the season with his mask off but then returns to himself and ends with his mask back on. That moment is really the climax of Season 2.”

The upcoming season is set to escalate the ideological battle between Gi-hun and In-ho. While Gi-hun clings to the hope of ending the games and saving lives, In-ho’s nihilistic view sees the players as “trash” with no hope for humanity.

Lee Byung-hun explained: “It’s almost as if they’re betting against each other. The Front Man is asking questions like, ‘Do you really think you’re going to be able to end the game? Do you really think there’s hope in people? Do you think the world’s going to change?’”

Hwang confirmed that Season 3 will serve as the “second chapter of Gi-hun and Front Man’s showdown,” with the season split into two parts.

Gi-hun enters the final season in a state of despair.: “His best friend’s gone, he’s been ripped of everything. He’s lost all he’s got,” said Lee Jung-jae. This emotional and mental collapse raises critical questions about Gi-hun’s resolve.

Hwang teased that Gi-hun’s journey could take a darker turn. “Is he still going to believe that he will be able to persuade others and leave together or put an end to the game?

“Or will he give in and become a completely different person? Someone just like the Front Man, who thinks, ‘What can I change?’”

With Season 3 premiering in late 2025, fans are left wondering if Gi-hun will be able to overcome his despair and outwit the Front Man, or will he succumb to the games?
