I’ve actually enjoyed The CW’s DC series Supergirl. It’s been a fun show to watch, and in my opinion, it’s been one of the better DC shows. But, The CW and producers Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions have announced that the upcoming sixth season of the series will be its last.

According to Variety, the writers have already started developing storylines for the final 20 episodes that will close out the series. Like all of these DC shows, it’s only a matter of time before they come to an end.

The star of the series, Melissa Benoist, addressed the news of the series coming to an end saying:

“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.

“I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”

The sixth season of the series will reportedly begin filming in Vancouver on September 28th. The network is looking to premiere the sixth and final season sometime in 2021.

As for why the series was cancelled, Deadline explained that it was a combination of shooting delays and Supergirl’s downward ratings trajectory. “Producers, the studio, the network and Benoist came to the decision that it was better to end the show with a longer final season.”

While this series is ending, there is a Superman and Lois spinoff show coming to The CW that fans seem to be looking forward to.
