THE DARK CRYSTAL Returns to Theaters This October, And Maybe, Just Maybe, There's Hope for More

Fathom Entertainment is bringing Jim Henson’s beloved fantasy film classic The Dark Crystal back to theaters for a limited run on October 12 and 13 in celebration of The Jim Henson Company's 70th anniversary. The Dark Crystal is hitting the big screen once again, and that's something to get excited about.

The 1982 fantasy epic remains one of the most iconic puppetry-driven films of all time. But with this news comes a little pang of sadness. Because here we are in 2025, talking about The Dark Crystal again and it’s not about The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, the stunning, tragically short-lived Netflix prequel series that premiered back in 2019.

That show was a fantasy masterpiece in its own right, delivering a epic story that expanded the world of Thra in incredible ways and honored everything that made the original film special. Unfortunately, despite plans for multiple seasons, Netflix pulled the plug in 2020, leaving fans hanging and the story unfinished.

So why bring that up now? Because this theatrical re-release could be more than just nostalgia. It might be a small spark. A reminder. A signal to Netflix that there's still love and demand for this magical universe. Is it likely that a couple of screenings could bring Age of Resistance back? Probably not. But as long as the Gelflings had a chance, so do we.

The screenings will also include a brand-new exclusive introduction by Brian Henson, giving fans something fresh to experience.

Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, said in a press release, “The magic of Jim Henson and The Dark Crystal has long been a hit with Fathom Entertainment audiences. We are honored to bring back this cinematic fantasy masterpiece and honor The Jim Henson Company in this, its 70th year of making fantasy magic for audiences of all ages.”

Tickets for The Dark Crystal re-release are available now at Fathom’s website. Whether you're reliving the magic or experiencing it for the first time, this is a chance to celebrate one of fantasy cinema’s most unique worlds on the big screen where it belongs.
