THE DEFENDERS Showrunner Explains How He Balances the Shows Characters
Balancing a film's characters can be difficult. Take Batman V Superman for example... the movie totally underuses Wonder Woman and overuses many of the other characters. A TV show can be just as difficult to balance characters out, but apparently, The Defenders showrunner, Marco Ramirez, has found a pretty interesting way to do it.
In a recent interview, Ramirez talks about balancing all the characters for the Defenders. Each who have had their own entire Netflix show to build and grow. He talks about how a lot of it is like a Jazz band:
"It's a lot like any great jazz band. Everyone needs to get a solo. We want to showcase everyone wherever possible. It was a balance between making sure no one character steals the show and at the same time completely understanding that in some storylines some characters are going to go into second gear while the others go into third or fourth. And that balanced throughout.
"It was a lot like looking at it musically, looking at it like an equaliser, trying to figure out, 'Okay, what levels are the correct levels? How much Matt is too much Matt? Is there too much Jessica?' The correct answer is there's never to much Jessica."
So true... so true. I love Jessica Jones. Krysten Ritter has done such an amazing job with that character that she has become one of my favorites of all the Netflix series. Part of that could do with the fact that her show had David Tenant doing a FANTASTIC job as the Purple Man, but Jessica Jones holds her own as well.
I can't wait for the culmination of all these series. The Defenders sounds like so much fun and to finally see everyone together will be so exciting. It really sounds like Ramirez has a love for this show and balancing it well is incredibly important to him.
