The DEXTER Revival Brings on a Director; New Details Shared
I was pretty freakin’ excited to learn that Showtime was bringing Dexter back for ten more episodes! That was an unexpected surprise. Michael C. Hall is set to reprise his role, and the series is bringing back creative talent to direct six of the ten new episodes.
Marcos Siega has signed on to executive produce and direct. He has been a frequent collaborator of returning Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips, and he also directed nine episodes of the original series, two of which were written by Phillips. Siega also directed The CW's Batwoman pilot and is directing HBO Max's The Flight Attendant. His credits also include True Blood, Veronica Mars, Tyrant, Blindspot, and The Following.
The series is set 10 years after Dexter Morgan went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, “the revival sees the character now living under an assumed name in a world away from Miami.”
It’s explained that the Dexter revival is not a new season of the original; it’s “technically considered a closed-ended revival though it does continue the original series. “
In an interview with THR’s TV's Top 5 podcast, Phillips explained:
"We basically do get to start from scratch. … Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale."
Phillips went on to note that this revival will offer an opportunity to make things right with fans after the series finale, which disappointed a lot of people:
"We’re not undoing anything. We’re not going to betray the audience and say, ‘Whoops, that was all a dream.’ What happened in the first eight years, happened in the first eight years.”
Production is scheduled to start early next year, and it will premiere in the fall of 2021. I can’t wait to see what Dexter has been up to these past ten years and where this next chapter of the story will take him.
