The Director of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 is in Talks To Helm Disney's MALEFICENT 2
Joachim Rønning, the co-director behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Kon Tiki is in talks with Disney to direct Maleficent 2. I think Rønning is a freakin' talented director! I loved what he did with Kon Tiki, and he did the best he could with the Pirates movie, which, as you know, is a franchise that has worn out its welcome... in my opinion.
I think he'll do a decent job with Maleficent 2 and the material that he's given. I understand that the guy wants to get paid the big bucks from the Mouse House. He's got a couple other projects in the works that are more exciting, though. He is attached to direct a feature film adaptation of Michael Crichton’s final novel Micro for Amblin Entertainment. He's also working with Jerry Bruckheimer on an original project called Origins.
Angelina Jolie is set to reprise her role and she previously said that it's going to be a "strong sequel." I wasn't the biggest fan of the first film because I wanted to see Maleficent go full-on villain. I just always loved how dark of a villain she originally was. But, to appeal to the little girls in the world they made her a hero, which I understand because my kids loved the movie.
The script is currently being worked on by Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow) and Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast). Hopefully, with Rønning on board to direct, we'll get that "strong" sequel that Angelina Jolie is promising.
The project is expected to start shooting in the first quarter of 2018.
