The Director of Stephen King's IT Wants To Make a PET SEMETARY Movie
One of my favorite Stephen King film adaptations is Pet Semetary. That movie scared the living shit out of me when I first saw it as a kid! Over the years, there's been talk of a new film adaptation, but so far, nothing has happened with it. Maybe it's just waiting for the right filmmaker to come along.
According to It director Andy Muschietti, he's the right guy for the job. In fact, he and his creative partner and sister Barbara want to make a new film based on the story one day. During an interview with Toronto Sun, when Muschietti was asked what movie he'd like to take on next, he said:
“We’re huge fans of Pet Sematary. If we can get our hands on that and do thePet Sematary we want to do, that will be something. One day, maybe.”
I love everything I've seen from It so far, so I could actually get behind the idea of Muschietti directing a new adaptation of Pet Semetary. It would be really hard to out do the original film, though. At least that's my opinion. That first movie is just such a well-made horror movie and it's so insanely terrifying! I have no idea if Muschietti could make a new film that is more terrifying, but if he thinks he could do it, I'd like to see him try.
In 2015 director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) and screenwriter Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train) were attached to develop a remake of the film, but there hasn't been any information on it since. They were the last filmmakers to hold the rights to the book. I'd much rather see Muschietti take it on, anyway.
Pet Semetary was originally released in 1983, and it tells the story of a family who is torn apart after the discovery of a pet cemetery near their home that has supernatural powers that can resurrect the dead. When they put this power to the test, things don't go very well for them and their lives turn into a complete nightmare.
On a side note, the house that inspired the story is actually currently up for sale for only $255,000. Maybe they could shoot the movie there! Like in the story, it's by a busy highway and there’s a pet cemetery in the back yard.
