The Directors of UNCUT GEMS Are Considering Directing a New PEE-WEE HERMAN Movie

Paul Reubens isn’t done with Pee-Wee Herman yet! The actor still very much wants to make his “Valley of the Dolls Pee-Wee movie,” and he’s been shopping his Pee-wee Herman Story script around Hollywood.

The project is described as a “very un-Pee-wee-sounding screenplay that takes his puckish TV persona into dark and unexpected territory.” The first draft of Reubens’s script was written in the late 1990s. In the story, Pee-Wee is released from prison and becomes an unlikely yodeling star. He ends up moving to Hollywood and becomes a movie star, and on his journey, he develops a severe pill and alcohol addiction that turns him into a monster. Pee-Wee is then sent to a mental hospital for shock treatment for his problems. I’m serious. Reubens says, “It’s about fame.”

Reubens reached out to the directors of Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems, the Safdie Brothers, and they are considering directing the project. If they do end up taking it on, it seems like the perfect kind of project for them as they dive into the dark territory of Pee-Wee.

Reubens has pitched the film to several filmmakers and producers including Judd Apatow and Netflix, who greenlit 2016’s Pee-wee’s Big Holiday. But they all turned it down. Reubens has agreed to make this film for $15 million and will incorporate de-aging technology to make him look younger.

While lots of people are skeptical about the project happening, Reubens said that he feels like “it’s going to probably happen” and that he has “a couple of people interested” in the project. If the Safdie Brothers do come on board, I’m sure the project will get made.

Would you watch this super dark story revolving around the lovable Pee-Wee Herman?
