The Duffer Brothers Give Fans a List of the Most Important Episodes to Rewatch Ahead of Season 5 of STRANGER THINGS
The wait is finally almost over for fans of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. The fifth and final season will drop in three phases, starting this week with the first four episodes.
If you’re looking for a refresher, but don’t want to rewatch all four seasons, the show’s creators, The Duffer Brothers, have some suggestions for episodes you can revisit that will be most relevant to the final season.
In a recent interview about the final season with The Hollywood Reporter, the creators had some pointers for fans, with Ross explaining:
“If you’re going to rewatch anything, I would definitely rewatch those early seasons because it really is about tying [everything] back to seasons one and two. [Those] are the seasons we referenced the most, because we really wanted this to be circular and to come full circle.
There are a lot of mysteries we set up and then intentionally did not answer in those early seasons. I mean, season one, we didn’t even know we were going to get a season two, but we still kept some mystery in there.
For instance, what is the Upside Down? Why was Will taken, which obviously is why this season begins with a flashback to his time in the Upside Down.”
The Duffers have picked four key episodes they recommend rewatching, as they help set up Volume 1 of the fifth season.
Season two, episode four, “Will the Wise”
Season two, episode six, “The Spy”
Season four, episode seven, “The Massacre at Hawkins Lab”
Season four, episode nine, “The Piggyback”
Matt said of the list:
“Season two is when we really started to build out the mythology and started to dive into everything, and how this was going to be an ongoing [series].
“That’s where we started to really plant the seeds for the mythology, and I think probably that’s why that is as relevant as it is. Season four is also highly relevant — ‘Massacre at Hawkins Lab’ is a good one.”
Ross added:
“That [episode] starts unveiling some of the Upside Down mythology and starts giving some answers, and, of course, all the stuff with Henry (Bower) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) continues to resonate throughout season five. Those are some good ones to revisit.”
The pair went on to talk about tons of cool tidbits regarding the final season, but one they really drove home was debunking the rumor that the Metallica-playing, D&D Dungeon Master Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) will be coming back from the grave.
The brothers said that while that has been one of the most enduring rumors, it’s just not in the cards. This is a bummer, but dead is dead, and Eddie died a hero.
Season five of Stranger Things will be released in three parts: Volume 1 on Nov. 26 (consisting of four episodes), Volume 2 on Christmas (three episodes) and The Finale on New Year’s Eve.
