THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS – Ralph Ineson Shares First Look at His Practical Galactus Costume
Marvel fans are getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Ralph Ineson suited up as the fearsome Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The actor has revealed photos of the practical costume he wore on set, and it’s every bit as imposing as the version that made it to the big screen.
Ineson, who stunned audiences as the Devourer of Worlds, took to Instagram to share a series of images from his time on set. Surprisingly, he filmed his scenes in complete isolation from the rest of the cast, making the process a unique and somewhat solitary experience.
The actor posted: “Time for some #fantasticfourfirststeps bts photos. The 1st is me out of make up, wearing the suit for VFX scanning (note the socks honouring another powerful space being 🤣) My daughter is with me wearing the Galactus helmet she made for me as a Father’s Day gift when I got the part. The design was from the comics as we hadn’t seen the film costume at that point.
“The second photo is helmet less Galactus between set ups in my costume tent, decorated by fellow #Lufc fan Lev from the amazing AD department, thank you to them and my team of makeup and costume crew for keeping me cool and safe on set. It literally took an army to get Galactus onto screen, and I’m very proud of the end product of all our hard work #marvel”**
The costume is an incredible practical build, and fans have praised Marvel Studios for staying true to the character’s iconic design. Many are already hoping this version of Galactus won’t be a one-and-done appearance.
When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ineson admitted he’d love to return as Galactus if the opportunity came:
“There’s a lot to explore in the lore, and he is a big character in the whole universe. But I would be one of the last people to know whether they are going to bring Galactus back. That’s a decision for Kevin [Feige] and the big boys, but I’d obviously love to come back and do some more Galactus.”
The actor also reflected on the experience of wearing a full costume instead of relying solely on motion capture:
“I knew that superheroes wear superhero suits, so I immediately assumed it would be practical, not realizing what a naive thought that was. I didn’t realize how rare it is to try and do something on the scale of Galactus in a practical way. But from when I first met Matt, he spoke about it as if they were going to build a suit for me to play the character practically.
“It’s a great gift for an actor to be able to do that, and whilst I also did some motion-capture work, the majority of my stuff was practical and in costume. So you really feel the part when you’ve got that kit on yourself.”
This first look makes it clear why fans are raving about Marvel’s bold decision to take a practical approach with such a massive character. It adds weight and presence that CGI alone often can’t deliver.
