The Fantasy-Adventure Gamebook Series LONE WOLF is Getting a Live-Action Interactive Series

Joe Dever’s popular fantasy-adventure gamebook series Lone Wolf is set to be adapted as a live-action interactive series by The U.K.’s ChorMedia and Holmgard Ltd. The series is currently in active development.

For those of you not familiar with Lone Wolf, the series is set in the fictional world of Magnamund, and the story follows the adventures of Lone Wolf, “the last surviving member of the Order of the Kai, an ancient caste of warrior monks who have mastered various natural and supernatural abilities.”

The series is being produced by Neil Chordia for ChorMedia and Joe Dever’s son Ben Devere is producing for Holmgard. Chordia said in a statement:

“Lone Wolf is a special project for me, as I grew up with the gamebooks and always dreamed of seeing a live-action version on the screen. The success of Netflix’s ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,’ showed that the technology now exists to add the interactive element to Lone Wolf and bring the beloved series to a whole new generation of fantasy fans and make them part of the adventure.”

Ben Devere had this to say of the series:

“Like a fantasy-Jedi hybrid, ‘Lone Wolf’ has depth and mythology to rival Middle Earth, with all the fun and adventure of the ‘Star Wars’ saga. What sets it apart is the interactivity baked into its DNA.”

There are 32 book in the Lone Wolf gamebook series. They have been published from 1984 to the present and have won Gamebook of the Year in 1985, 1986 and 1987. Gamebooks allow the reader to participate in the story by making choices. They are also known as ‘choose your own adventure’ books. The format is ideally suited for interactive series adaptation.

Joe Dever passed away before he could finish the series but he left behind extensive notes with his son Ben and collaborator Vincent Lazzari so they could finish what he started. Dead in the Deep, the first posthumous Lone Wolf gamebook, was published in 2019 and the final two books are in the works.
