THE FATHER Trailer Stars Anthony Hopkins as an Elderly Man Losing His Grip on Reality

A trailer has been released for Anthony Hopkins’ upcoming film The Father. Hopkins plays an elderly man in the film who begins to lose his grip on reality. As you’ll see in the trailer, we’ll get to see Hopkins deliver another incredible performance.

The film comes from first time director Florian Zeller, and it’s based on a script he wrote for a stage play back in 2012. The movie also has a wonderfully talented supporting cast that includes Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Mark Gatiss (Sherlock), Imogen Poots (Green Room), Rufus Sewell (Dark City), and Olivia Williams (Dollhouse).

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:

Anthony is 80, mischievous, living defiantly alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter, Anne, encouragingly introduces. Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can’t make daily visits anymore and Anthony’s grip on reality is unravelling. As we experience the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can Anthony cling to? How does Anne cope as she grieves the loss of her father, while he still lives and breathes before her? The Father warmly embraces real life, through loving reflection upon the vibrant human condition; heart-breaking and uncompromisingly poignant – a movie that nestles in the truth of our own lives.

The Father will get a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles on December 18, 2020. The movie got great reviews at Sundance, and Hopkins could end up with a Best Actor Oscar nomination.
