The Film Adaptation of SPY VS. SPY is Moving Forward With a Director

The classic Mad Magazine comic strip Spy vs. Spy has been on the road to getting a feature film adaptation for almost a decade. Well, it’s one step closer to actually happening as producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer are looking to bring on Rawson Marshall Thurber to direct the movie.

The movie was initially being developed by Imagine Entertainment back in 2011 and Howard was going to direct it at the time. That’s obviously changed. Thurber is the director of films such as We’re The Millers, Central Intelligence, and Skyscraper.

David Koepp was also initially brought on to produce alongside Howard and Grazer and the screenplay was originally being written by John Kamps (Premium Rush, Ghost Town). I imagine other screenwriters have worked on the script over the years. Thurber has written every movie he’s directed, so I imagine he’ll also take a crack at the Spy vs. Spy script as well.

The film was previously described as "a physical and highly visual action comedy with two spies going mano a mano in ruthless fashion.” I enjoyed the Spy vs. Spy comic and I was even a big fan of the 1984 video game. I used to play that all the time!

Anyway, this could make for an extremely fun movie and it’ll be cool to see what Thurber ends up doing with it if he ends up closing the deal. Thurber is currently developing several other projects including Netflix’s Kingdom Come, Lionsgate’s Dust, and a Choose Your Own Adventure movie.
