The Film Adaptation of The Hit Musical WICKED is Still Moving Forward, Here's an Update

Movie Wicked by Joey Paur

In case you’ve been wondering what has been going on with the feature film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked, we’ve got an update for you!

I’m actually a fan of the musical and I’ve been looking forward to seeing the film, but last month the movie was removed from Universal Pictures’ release slate. It was supposed to be released on December 20th, 2019. But, according to composer Stephen Schwartz, that was always a fake date and the move is still moving forward. While talking to THR, he said:

“That was always a fake date. There wasn't a prayer in hell. That being said, we're making really good progress. The screenplay has gone through a few drafts. In fact, while I'm out here, I'm going to be seeing Winnie [Holzman] and we're working on the most recent draft.”

Holzman is the person who wrote the book for the stage version of Wicked and is now working on the screenplay. Schwartz went on to say:

“When we're ready, we'll go. But we want to make sure we're ready. It won't be forever but it also won't be next year."

In case you have any doubt about this Wicked movie happening, Schwartz makes it very clear that it is:

“I will tell you 100 percent there will be a movie of Wicked and it won't be that far away but it won't be next year because we're still writing. Pre-production hasn't even begun but that could start in the not-too-distant future."

It sounds like maybe the movie will be released at some point in 2020. I’m excited to see how it turns out. I wonder who they’ll cast in the roles and what it will end up looking like visually. This is just such a great story filled with wonderful music. I hope the movie does all that justice.

Who would you like to see cast as the two lead roles in Wicked?
