The FINAL FANTASY Saga is Getting a Live-Action Series Adaptation
The Final Fantasy video game franchise has been around for 30 years and after all that time it’s finally getting a live-action adaptation! There have been several cool animated movies made, but this will be the first time we see this world brought to life in live-action form. That’s something that has got to excite the fans!
Sony Pictures Television is developing a TV series with Hivemind (The Witcher) and Square Enix, the Japanese developer behind the games, also involved. It’s comforting to know that the developer behind the games is involved with the creation of this series.
There aren’t any story details to talk about yet, but we do know that it will tell “an original story set in the fantastic world of Eorzea, a continuously growing world first introduced in Final Fantasy XIV, which incorporates characters from across the franchise’s long history.” So, even though the series will tell an original story, it will pull elements from the source material to tell that story.
Variety goes on to say that the series will “explore the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict, and feature a blend of new and familiar faces like fan-favorite anti-hero Cid. Features and creatures from the game series, such as magitek, beastmen, airships and chocobos, will all also play a part in the TV adaptation.”
Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton will write the series and serve as executive producers alongside a team of other producers that includes Jason F. Brown and Sean Daniel for Sony, and Dinesh Shamdasani for Hivemind.
I’m actually pretty excited to see how this Final Fantasy series turns out. There is a lot of awesome TV content out there these days, so we know the tools and talent are there to give us a great Final Fantasy series. What do you hope to see incorporated into the show?
