The First Draft of BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE Had a Very Different Title
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is an excellent film that has stood the test of time and set up a fanbase that has stretched over the decades. The movie set up a sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, and now all these years later is welcoming a third film to the franchise, Bill & Ted Face the Music, that fans are counting down the days to watch. But the name of the first film was not always set in stone.
Ed Solomon, who co-wrote the movies with Chris Matheson, recently tweeted photos of the cover and first couple pages of the original draft of the script from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Only, back then it was titled Bill & Ted’s Outstanding Time Van. This doesn’t roll off the tongue quite as easily. The phone booth was a fun and unique part of the film, and a time traveling vehicle had already been done four years earlier with the first Back to the Future. I’m glad they went with the phone booth. It was fun to see all their historical friends crammed inside.
He also shared the first couple pages of the script setting up the beginning of the film, as well as some hand-written notes, including one that says, “This film makes no sense.” Ha! I’m glad they worked out the kinks and have the film legacy they built to show for it. I can’t wait to see Bill & Ted Face the Music, especially after the rave review Kevin Smith gave it during its Comic-Con@Home panel. Check out the tweets below, and watch Bill & Ted Face the Music On Demand and in theaters on August 28th.
