THE FLASH Director Says the Film's Weird-Looking CGI Was Done on Purpose and Explains Why

When I first saw The Flash, it was months before the movie actually came out, and we were told that some of the visual effects weren’t finished. So when I was watching the movie and saw some funky-looking CGI effects, I assumed it would be polished up by the time the movie was actually released.

Well, when I saw the completely finished movie, the CGI still looked strange and off. It looks like they are just bad visual effects! Well, it turns out that this was part of the visual style that director Andy Muschietti wanted for the film. He’s saying that those effects were intentional.

In a recent interview with io9, Muschietti and his producer partner and sister Barbara Muschietti were asked about one of The Flash's early scenes, which features the hero rescuing a bunch of newborn babies that fell out of the window of from a hospital.

When it was brought up at the sequence looked off, Barbara joked: "No, we used all real babies." Then Muschietti defended the CGI and explained why the CGI looks weird at times:

"The idea, of course, is... we are in the perspective of the Flash. Everything is distorted in terms of lights and textures. We enter this 'waterworld' which is basically being in Barry's POV. It was part of the design so if it looks a little weird to you that was intended."

I get what he’s saying and what he was trying to do, but they could’ve done it in a way where the visual effects didn’t look like bad CGI because that’s how a lot of people are seeing it. While a lot of fans are enjoying the story that the film tells when I was walking out of the theater listing to conversations, there was a lot of talk about the “bad CGI” in the movie. You’ll also find fans on social media talking about it.

It’s definitely an interesting visual style choice, but it’s one that isn’t really working for some audience members and fans. What did you think of the visual effects style choices in The Flash?
