THE GAME OF LIFE Movie Lands at Amazon MGM as Hasbro Expands Its Hollywood Universe
One of the most recognizable board games ever made is officially rolling the dice in Hollywood. A live-action adaptation of The Game of Life is now in development at Amazon MGM Studios.
Amazon MGM is teaming up with Chernin Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment to bring the classic game to the big screen. Directing the film is Sean Anders, working from a script by Allan Loeb, with longtime collaborator John Morris also producing. The project is being guided by producers Peter Chernin, David Ready, and Zev Foreman.
Details about the story are being kept under wraps, but the concept itself offers plenty of room to play. Since its original debut in 1860 as The Checkered Game of Life, the game has evolved into a global staple, selling over 70 million copies across 59 countries and 26 languages.
It’s built around big life choices, careers, relationships, unexpected detours, and that iconic spinner that determines your fate. That framework could easily translate into a fun, unpredictable cinematic experience.
This project has actually been in the works for a while. Chernin and Hasbro had been trying to crack the right take on The Game of Life for some time. Things finally clicked after a meeting with Loeb, who brought an idea that helped shape the direction of the film.
From there, Anders was brought in to direct, and Amazon MGM quickly jumped on board. Now it’s being positioned as a priority project for the studio as Loeb gets to work on the screenplay.
Anders and Morris have built a strong track record together, especially in comedy. Their past work includes Spirited with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, and Instant Family starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne. They also teamed up on Horrible Bosses 2, along with earlier hits like We’re the Millers, Hot Tub Time Machine, and She’s Out of My League. That mix of humor and heart could be exactly what they bring to The Game of Life movie.
Loeb also brings a wide range of experience to the table. His credits include Collateral Beauty, Just Go With It, The Switch, The Dilemma, and 21. He’s also working on the upcoming The Best Is Yet to Come. His storytelling tends to lean into character-driven narratives, which could help ground the film’s high-concept premise.
This movie is just one piece of a much larger plan from Hasbro Entertainment, which has been aggressively building out adaptations of its most popular brands.
Projects in the pipeline include a new take on Clue, a Dungeons & Dragons series titled Forgotten Realms at Netflix, a Monopoly movie, and a sprawling Magic: The Gathering universe across film and television. There’s also a live-action Power Rangers series in development for Disney+ and a My Little Pony live-action film at Amazon MGM.
Chernin Entertainment, for its part, continues to be a major player in film production, with past successes like Ford v Ferrari, Hidden Figures, and The Greatest Showman. More recently, they’ve been behind projects like Fear Street and Luther: The Fallen Sun, with several new films already lined up.
At this point, it’s anyone’s guess what kind of story The Game of Life will tell. Will it lean into comedy, drama, or something more fantastical? The game itself has always been about the unpredictable nature of life, so there’s plenty of creative freedom to explore.
