The GAME OF THRONES Prequel Confirmed to Be Set 5,000 Years Before the Events of the Series in a Very Different Setting
George R.R. Martin recently talked to Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series and clarified a few things.
There have been rumors that the series would be set 10,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Turns out that’s not the case. Martin says that the series is set about 5,000 years before the events and explains that it’s going to be a very different world that won’t be familiar to fans.
He explains that “… it’s closer to 5,000 years. But you’re right. Westeros is a very different place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series.”
We don’t know much about the series that is being developed by Martin and Jane Goldman at this point. But what we do know is that it will star Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse.
It’s also been said that “the project chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.” The network teased the plot with the following logline:
"Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it's not the story we think we know."
The story is set during what is known as “The Long Night,” which is a great winter that lasted for years and brought forth the White Walkers. This is a time where the First Men and the Children of the Forest fought against the White Walkers in the North, and the epic battle concluded with the Battle for the Dawn where the first members of the Night’s Watch defeated the White Walkers.
After these events, Bran the Builder constructed The Wall, which is a 700-feet-high and three hundred miles long barrier that you all know from Game of Thrones. This was built to protect the realms of Men if the White Walkers ever decided to come back.
I just can’t wait to see how this series actually plays out! There’s just so much awesomeness in the history of Game of Thrones to play with!
