The GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE Trailer Teases a Big Connection to the Gozer Worshipers Mentioned in the First Film

The first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife was released yesterday, and the fans of the franchise flipped for it! There was a lot of great and exciting footage to see, and I can’t wait to watch this movie!

We don’t really know exactly where this story is going, but the trailer teased a big connection to the original film that could end up playing a big role in the story as it ties to the villain Gozer, who is an ancient Sumerian god. In the trailer, we see Egon Spengler’s family that includes a single mother named Callie (Carrie Coon), her science-obsessed daughter Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), and gearhead son Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) movie to an old farm estate in a small little mining town located in Summerville, Oklahoma.

This farmhouse is filled with all kinds of old Ghostbuster equipment that Egon obviously stashed there. While there, Phoebe and Trevor start to explore and learn more about their grandfather and what he was up to. At one point we see Phoebe and her friend (Logan Kim) entering property that’s owned by the Shandor Mining Company.

Shandor is the name you need to pay attention to. Egon mentioned the name in the original Ghostbusters film! Remember the building that Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) lived in that was built to be a super-conductive antenna and portal to our realm. The building was created by Ivo Shandor and the Cult of Gozer to bring forth their "divine" master Gozer itself in its Destructor Form.

Egon explained that Shandor was a doctor who performed “a lot of unnecessary surgery” before establishing his own secret society in 1920. It’s shown in the trailer on a sign for the Shandor Mining Co. that it was established in 1927.

Egon goes on to explain that Shandor decided society was too sick to survive after the first World War. He also said that Shandor had close to a thousand followers when he died, and the cult conducted bizarre rituals at the top of the Shandor Building “intended to bring about the end of the world.” Luckily the Ghostbusters were around to stop it. You can watch the scene where Egon explains all of this below.

It looks like Egon ended up moving to Oklahoma at some point to investigate the same strange seismic activity that seismologist and summer school teacher Mr. Grooberson (Paul Rudd) has been noticing. He also says that it's been 30 years since the last ghost sighting.

It seems like the town’s history with Shandor and his followers suggest that the green glowing paranormal activity happening is tied to Gozer or the cult of Gozer. Don’t forget, we also saw the foot of one of Gozer’s demonic, dog-like minions in the trailer as well! That could be the return of Zuul.

As a huge fan of the original film, this is so freakin’ exciting for me! It looks like Gozer is going to make another attempt to bring about the end of the world and the Ghostbusters will have to be called back in to stop it! I wonder if this whole small town is filled with the leftover Gozer worshipers.

What do you think about this!?
