THE GOLDBERGS Creator Adam Goldberg Has Secretly Written a GOONIES 2 Script and is Pitching it To Richard Donner
The creator of ABC’s nostalgia-fueled series The Goldbergs, Adam Goldberg, revealed on Twitter that he has secretly been writing a script for a sequel to The Goonies! We’ve been hearing for years from director Richard Donnor that there have been talks regarding the sequel, but there’s been no movement.
Well, Goldberg already has a meeting set up with Donner to pitch his sequel idea and promises that The Goonies 2 will happen. Here’s his direct quote as he says he rivals Josh Gad, who recently hosted a Goonies reunions, as the ultimate Goonies fan.
"I rival Josh Gad as ultimate fan of The Goonies. For the last 9 years I’ve been secretly writing PART 2 for fun. It’s my masterpiece. I even had a big meeting scheduled with Richard Donner… canceled 'cause of the lockdown! THE GOONIES 2 WILL happen when life resumes. Promise," Goldberg shared.
Goldberg even shared a photo teasing the script that he’s been writing. In the photo, we see the title of the is, The Goonies II: Never Say Die. I’m 100% on board!
Steven Spielberg, the film's executive producer, was recently asked about the possibility of the sequel by Gad during the reunion, and he explained that the creative team revisits the idea of a sequel every so often before they brush it off:
“Chris and Dick and I and Lauren [Shuler Donner] have had a lot of conversations about it, and every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water. The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre. I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies we made in the ‘80s.”
Maybe Adam Goldberg has cracked the code! Would you be up for a Goonies sequel from Goldberg?
