The Goonies Had an Oath That Was Cut From The Film, But You Can Read It Here

One of the best movies to come out of the 80s, in my opinion, was director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg’s The Goonies. I freakin’ loved that movie, and when I was a kid, I wanted to be a part of that group! Who wouldn’t want to be a Goonie!?

I’m pretty sure The Goonies, along with Indiana Jones, gave me my need for exploration and adventure. When I’m not working and writing or watching movies, I make an effort to find cool stuff to explore. I often find myself in old abandoned mines and ghost towns looking for cool stuff! Whenever I embark on these little adventures, I always think of The Goonies. I’ve even been in a mine once where there was a rock formation inside that looked like a skull when the light hit it! So cool.

Anyway, The Goonies actually had an oath in the film! I didn’t know about this until I started doing some research and I came across it. The oath was ultimately cut from the film for some reason. The Oath reads;

“I will never betray my Goon deck friends, we’ll stick together until the whole world ends. Through heaven and hell and nuclear war, good pals like us will stick like tar. In the city, or the country or the forest or the boonies, I am proudly declared a fellow Goony.”

I love it! This is the kind of stuff that makes me happy, and it was great to be reminded that this exists. It’s a wonderful little fun fact that I know fans will appreciate.

The Goonies is an old-fashioned yarn about “a band of adventurous kids who take on the might of a property developing company which plans to destroy their home to build a country club. When the children discover an old pirate map in the attic, they follow it into an underground cavern in search of lost treasure but come up against plenty of dangerous obstacles along the way.”

The movie starred Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Kwan, Keri Green, Martha Plimpton, Joe Pantoliano, and more. It was released in 1985, and I’ve been watching it ever since!
