THE GOONIES Needs a Prequel Movie Based on The Legendary Pirate One-Eyed Willy!
The Goonies is one of my favorite films of all time. It's such a fun and entertaining adventure movie. It made me want to go out and embark on my own adventures with my friends, and I've had my fair share of crazy adventures!
There's been a lot of talk of a sequel over the past few years for The Goonies and I hope that sequel happens one day. But, there's another Goonies film that I would love to see get made. For years I thought it would be awesome to see a prequel film based on the legendary pirate One-Eyed Willy! I'd actually be more excited to see a film that revolves around that character than a sequel.
One-Eyed Willy is the first Goonie and there's such a wonderful opportunity here to tell his story. We don't know much about the character, but we do know he was a pirate in the year 1632 and he was born with only one eye. At some point, he ended up getting trapped in a cave in Astoria, Oregon with his crew and a vast treasure of jewels and gold on his ship, which was called The Inferno.
Sean Astin's Mikey offered the story of One-Eyed Willy in the scene below:
Here's a summary of the story if you can't watch the video above right now:
One day, Willy and his crew stole a great treasure of gold and jewelry, then they loaded it all up onto his ship, The Inferno and they sailed away into the sunset. Then when word got the British king about the theft, he sent out an entire armada to go after the pirates. Then after a few weeks, they finally found Willy. Then there was a big war between the armada and The Inferno, during the fire fight, there were guns bursting, and cannons blasting, it was massive. Then Willy fled because he knew he'd get killed if he stayed around, and then he and his men got into a cave, and the British blew up the walls all around him. Caving him in. Ever since then, Willy had been there, forever trapped. For 5-6 years, One-Eyed Willy and his pirates had been down there digging tunnels and caves, and setting booby traps so that anybody who tried to get in would die. Then once their job was done, Willy killed all his men so that they wouldn't get to his treasure. Although, it is said that one of the pirates must have gotten out alive, with a map and a key.
Why not tell this story as a movie!? It's such a fun film concept and I'm actually kinda surprised that Spielberg hasn't done this himself! This would make for such an awesome movie! This is a Goonies film that could be made now because you don't have to worry about the logistics of bringing the cast back together and figuring out what to do with them in a story.
I don't know, I think fans of The Goonies would enjoy a pirate film about the first Goonie. The story of One-Eyed Willy is a story that many of us grew up with, it's the story that set the stage for Mikey and his friends' treasure hunting adventure.
You've got the nostalgia factor with an already existing movie and concept, but we also get some new, different and unique pirate movie! There's such an amazing adventurous story to tell here and there's a lot of room for creativity in building that story and the characters that fill it. Someone needs to make this movie happen!
Would you be up for watching a One-Eyed Willy movie?
