Brett Haley, director of the films The Hero and Hearts Beat Loud, has been hired to take on the prequel to the classic musical Grease. Summer Lovin’ was written by Leah McKendrick and John August, and will cover the time period of the summer that Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson met and fell in love, famously chronicled in the song “Summer Nights.”

The director gig for the film was highly sought-after, and Deadline reports that Haley got the spot because of his passion for the project, as well as his pitch for bringing the story up to date for a 2020 audience. The studio is very hopeful that this project will take off, and depending on its success, it may pave the way for a franchise based on the films in the future.

I think this movie will have a big fanbase, and hopefully it’s a success for Haley and the cast, which is yet to be determined. Are you looking forward to the Grease prequel, and possibly more movies based in that world in the future?
