When the world was shut down during the pandemic, writer and director David Lowery used the opportunity to look back at his upcoming film The Green Knight and re-edit the whole thing. The movie that we end up seeing later this month will be a different film than the one that was originally supposed to be released.

Lowery used the time to fine-tune his movie because according to him, “Sometimes movies just aren’t ready.” He explains in an interview with Vanity Fair:

“I just gave myself permission to dig back into the movie, unlock it, and rework the entire thing. I found the affection I needed to cut it with love in my heart instead of disappointment and hate. It’s different—it’s much better.”

This makes me happy. I’m happy that we are going to get a version of The Green Knight that the director is happy with! This is the best version of the film that we can get, and I can’t wait to see it! Lowery seemed to use his time wisely while in lockdown. This movie looks so freakin’ good!

The film stars Dev Patel as Sir Gawain, “King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic green-skinned stranger.” As you can see, Patel is wielding a badass battle axe. Here’s the official synopsis:

An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, THE GREEN KNIGHT tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger.  From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.

In addition to Patel, The Green Knight features Joel Edgerton, Barry Keoghan, Ralph Ineson, Alicia Vikander, and Sean Harris. The movie will be released on July 30th, 2021.

Lowery also talked about his upcoming Disney project Peter Pan & Wendy and explains how The Green Knight influenced that film:

“This is the movie that I’m making in which I’m finally embracing adulthood. You don’t have to be revisionist with it—you just try to deepen it and illuminate it, and that’s what I do with The Green Knight. There’s lots of, you know, flying and sword fighting and swashbuckling, but there’s emotional stuff going on in this movie that I think I wouldn’t have been able to do had I not made The Green Knight.”

I’ve enjoyed all of the films that Lowery has made. He’s a great filmmaker, and not only am I stoked for The Green Knight, but I’m also stoked about Peter Pan &Wendy.

The film stars Ever Anderson as Wendy, Alexander Molony as Peter Pan, and Yara Shahidi is playing Tinker Bell in the movie. It also stars Jude Law as Captain Hook, Molly Parker as Mrs. Darling, Alan Tudyk as Mr. Darling, Joshua Pickering as John, Jacobi Jupe as Michael, Alyssa Wapanatank as Tiger Lily, and Jim Gaffigan as Smee.

Based on J. M. Barrie’s novel Peter and Wendy and inspired by the 1953 animated classic, Peter Pan & Wendy is the timeless tale of a young girl who, defying her parents’ wishes to attend boarding school, travels with her two younger brothers to the magical Neverland. There, she meets a boy who refuses to grow up, a tiny fairy and an evil pirate captain, and they soon find themselves on a thrilling and dangerous adventure far, far away from their family and the comforts of home.

The director of the movie previously said in a statement:

“Peter Pan has long been one of my favorite stories, partially because I’ve always resisted growing up, but also because of the heart, adventure and imagination that makes J.M. Barrie’s original tale so evergreen. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to redefine his iconic characters for a new generation - and even more excited that I get to do so with such an exceptional cast and crew.”

Peter Pan & Wendy will be released sometime in 2022.
